Andover Children's Academy
"Pursuing excellence in child care and education."

Curriculum

The goal of our teaching is to introduce various facts of life by using books, songs, art projects, nature, science, social studies, movement, and cooking as well as math and language arts. Dramatic play, blocks, puppets, and various props are used to enhance the teaching. The skills that we teach are: cognitive thinking, creative language, math concepts, self-help skills, physical development, self esteem, small motor skills, discipline.

We teach math, language, science, social studies, art, music, and movement. Here are some of the activities we provide while teaching the children.

In math we teach: sorting, grouping, matching, seriation, and comparing. By using unifix cubes, Cuisinaire rods, parquetry blocks, and counting materials, such as: buttons, nuts, shells, keys, and small animals, children learn pre-math skills or mathematical concepts.

In language we teach: listening and comprehension, following the story line, finishing the story, answering open-ended questions, rhyming, giving and understanding directions, and story writing. Children are exposed to stories of all nations and cultures. Our writing table is full of paper, envelopes, recipe cards, restaurant receipts, telephone books, sight words on cards, pens, and pencils.

In science we teach: prediction, guessing, investigating, observation, recording, and drawing conclusions. Children learn about recycling, conservation, endangered animals, dinosaurs, and the human body. Teachers encourage curiosity, hands-on practice, and endless questions.

We encourage creative play. Imagining and pretending are creative tools children have in order to investigate the world around them. Through pretending children learn social roles, cooperation, and prosocial values such as honesty, loyalty, truthfulness, negotiating skills, how to deal with people you disagree with, and how to express feelings in words.

We encourage multi-cultural education. Learning about different cultures of the world is incorporated in our everyday learning process. Our multi-cultural student body helps us all learn about the different cultures and customs of our students families.

Teachers provide the environment for the children's play and learning activities. These activities can be altered on the basis of the child's prior knowledge, interest, and individuality.
